Hi,

I have a home network running 3 systems using XP Pro.

Until recently I could go into the workgroup (old network neightbouthood) and doubleclick the computer I wanted to view and be able to view the shared files and printers from that computer.

However in my infinite wisdom I have been playing around with the Computer Management section of XP in order to setup Remote Access.

Since then I now get a dialog prompting for a password whenever I try accessing the computers :

The dialog has an image of a set of keys with "Connect to <<machinename>> in the titlebar. It has the following text in it :

====================================================

Connecting to <<machinename>>

Username : <<machinename>>\Guest
(Ghosted!?!?)

Password : __________________

[] Remember My Password

====================================================

This only happens on the 2 machines I have been playing about with, the other one still lets me in without prompting me.

The strange thing is that I have turned the guest account off and removed the password. Both systems now only have the one User (me) and I am the administrator.

I can only think that I have changed something inadvertently under computer management, so does anyone have any idea what I may have done?

I've had a look back but can't seem to find anything that I may have changed.

All suggestions welcome

Thanks

Craig

In a workgroup, make all the users of computer A, users on computer B with the same username and passwords. All the users on Computer B, members of Computer A with the same usernames and password. Synchronize all workstations in the workgroup so that the same set of username and passwords are on all.

See if this note does not describe your issue:

Hi,

I did what you said but it didn't fix the problem... I still get the message asking for the password. However now... (I registered the .NET passport thing on my User Account) it also lists my email address (the one registered with the .NET passport) as a username and any password I input doesn't grant access.

I even cleared the passwords for the guest account on both machines, I get the message when I try and enter a blank password :

"\\<machinename> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon Faliure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

... and no message at all if I input an incorrect password.

Any help appreciated as usual

Thanks

Craig

Change the value for "Simple File Sharing - recommended" to unchecked, or, enable the Guest Account on all machines.

Ok,

I disabled Simple File Shareing and enabled the Guest Account on both machines, however I still get the same dialog requesting a password for the guest account.

This only happens when trying to browse Computer A from another machine none of the others are affected.

I think it must be to do with some kindof security settings on Computer A, prompting for a password before allowing access... however I don't know where to look for this setting.

Thanks again

Craig

hi craig (what a great name !)
I think the crucial thing here is the line
in the above link that says

"You should also UNCHECK the 'User must change password' line and CHECK 'password never expires'."

Mine now works, i had EXACTLY the same problem (and the same name, which i found mildly disturbing BUT funny too!)
I am also a fiddler, frequently gets me into trouble.

I have checked both "User cannot change pa$word" AND "pa$word never expires" you might have overlooked this?

e-mail me privately 4 a chat?

all the best,
