Is there any way to promote a standalone workgroup server to a domain controller in NT4 (like running dcpromo in W2K) without reinstalling the OS?

As far as I can remember you have to reinstall like when you have a member server and want it to be a BDC

no...unless you use third party tools. You have to resinstall.

get a copy of UPROMOTE, it's self explanatory and works great. It runs $100 for a one time license or about $250 for an unlimited license.
