Hello,

I've to promote a 2003 standard edition member server to a DC.
It's OK with dcpromo ?
What problems could arises ?

Thanks and regards
getndz

Is your AD already running on 2003 servers?

If yes, then go ahead and DCPROMO and proceed from there.

Yes, the AD is already running ( 2 DCs)

ok.............At ur old DC do(at command) a adprep/forestprep....it will take some time. Then do adprep/domainprep /gpprep.These r for the preparation of ur domain.Add ur new srv as a member serve, and then do a dcpromo

Ummmm, why are you advising these these things?? Do you know the current versions of getndz's servers??

You only need to use adprep /domainprep /gpprep when you prepare a windows 2000 domain for an upgrade to Windows 2003 SP1 domain.

getndz,

Are your existing DCs Windows 2003 or 2003 R2?? The server you want to promote to a DC is it 2003 or 2003 R2??

If the server you want to promote to a DC is R2 then you need to run adprep /forestprep from the 2nd R2 cd to upgrade the schema version to 31, this is necessary before a 2003 R2 can become a DC. If one of your existing DCs is already R2 then you can just run dcpromo.exe to make that server a DC.

You might want to tell us a bit more about your existing servers (service packs, windows 2003 version) and environment before we can tell you exactly what you need to do....

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

pagy is correct...forgot about the R2 issue (duh).

Thanks to all.
To resume:
Both existing DCs are:
WIN2003 R2, SP2, Standard edition servers

The new server, already installed as member SRV, is also a
WIN2003 R2, SP2, Standard edition server.
The member server must be promoted to DC in the same Domain.

The tree :
2 DCs in : "domain.intra"
2 DCs in : "industrie.domain.intra"
The new server will be installed in the domain industrie.domain.intra.

Hope you have all the informations

regards

Ok, if the existing DCs are 2003 R2 then you can go ahead and promote the member server to a DC.
