I need to promote a cube database from one server to another. If I right click on the database I can perform a backup. Would I have any problems restoring that backup to another server? Is this the best way to promote my Analysis database

If you are using SSAS (2005) you can synchronize your cube to another server. If it is a 2K AS then the Backup restore is your best solution. Many moons ago I had encountered problems where the we backed up a procesed cube and it restored it unprocessed. THese were around the time of SP2 so it kind of tells you how long ago that was, and the cubes were quite large in size say 80-100GB.

How do I synchronize the cube with another server?

1) In SSMS Connect to the SSAS Server where you are Synchronizing the DB to.
2)Right Click on the Databases Node.
3) Selecting Synchronize will open the Wizard.

THe wizard is easy to follow.

This must be done on the Destination Server. I made the mistake of doing it backwards and over wrote about 5 days worth of work. Fortunately I had just imported the DB and cubes into BIDS and checked everything into source control.
