Hi All,

Just a quickie....I have a slight problem with my Compaq Proliant ML530 G2.

The server runs beautifully with NT4 Server installed and is our Exchange server and BDC.

However, we recently purchaesed a Dell PV122T VS80, this is an 8-tape DLT autoloader, it connects via SCSI but whenever I plug the unit in the system will not boot, the disk array is not picked up. As soon as you unplug the unit the disks are picked up again and it boots, I have checked the SCSI ID's, and made sure the SCSI card (The compaq standard card) works and these are all Ok.

Any suggestions, greatly appreciated!

Mike

Are you plugging the unit into the onboard SCSI or the RAID controller? You must not plug this into the RAID controller, only the onboard SCSI.

wouldnt you need another card for this

i'm not near a 530 just now but did the onboard support the requirement for the low - you will know by the symbol at the side of the scsi port

i know (as said above) the array controller cannot be used

out of curiosity why did you buy a dell then add it to a compaq - sticking with hp would have been better as you the support paq's would support it and so would hplt&t

If memory serves the ML530 G2 has a VHDCI connector for external use that is not connected by default. i.e. each internal SCSI channel is connected to a drive bay not to the external connector.

Believe you have to disconnect a bay and connect the cable going to the VHDCI but not positive. Will have a look on Monday.

However if you are using say a 68 pin cable for your tape array it is likely you are plugging it onto your RAID card which is why your system is going down.

Is the PV122T an LVD rather than SE drive then? Why bother with a VS80, not exactly the fastest drive in the world.

Mind you I'm having no end of trouble with Quantum L200 DLT8000 tape libraries at the moment so what do I know. :-(

Hi There,

Thanks for all the feedback. Turns out I WAS plugging in to the RAID controller. This was what was killing it.

However, the onboard SCSI didn't pick up the tape unit in Windows for some reason, so I fitted an additional SCSI card and retried and the unit was picked up!

The reason I wanted a Dell unit for an HP/Compaq unit was
due to cost, we were after an SDLT unit, but the boss didn't want to pay for it...grrr :(

Anyway chaps, thank you for all your help!!

Mike
