Hi,

Trying to find a computer to mainly for a lan http server and php/sql testing at home I couldn't complain when I found an old Proliant to replace the ageing PII350 box we had. Trouble is, I think I'm in a bit over my head with building it.

I have to admit I've not really had much experience with full on servers, to be honest I wasn't expecting such a big step up from desktops as far as the deep stuff goes. I've got the Smartstart pack (6.10) but can't get anything done, it seems to want some floppy disk or another for everything I try to do. If someone could tell me where I can get images for these disks or tell me where I'm going wrong I'd appriciate it.

I'm hoping to install XP Pro (left the 2003 discs at my parents over xmas and it's a 4 hour trip to get them -doh) if it's got any relevance to anything.

Thanks.

smartstart will not recognise xp

from hp site go to 1850 download page - or you maybe 6.1 disk might have it but maybe too new

you want the compaq erase utility and the array configuration utility

run the erase - this will blank the box
run the array configuration - this will allow you to configure the array

then just boot from the xp disk and let it do the install

smartstart only works for server type os's

Cool, that sounds a lot less painful than I expected.

I'll go find those utilities. Thanks man.

6.1 was too new for the 1850R. You will probably need 5.2 or 5.3... those had the setup floppy disk for smart start

Lead, Follow of get the %&*#%$ out of the way !!
