Proliant 1600 PCI Video Adapter 1

Looking for a PCI video adapter that will function in a Compaq Proliant 1600 running NT4. Need 32 bit color. I have tried several with no luck. Newer adapters like NVidia and ATI (w/TV out) keep the RAID controller from recognizing the SCSI hard disks once the adapter is installed. I booted SmartStart 5.50 in an attempt to change BIOS settings but no settings worked. Older PCI adapters with 4MB work and the server boots but I need one that has at least 16MB RAM, 32MB+ preferred. Anybody know without a doubt which adapter would work?

Thanks for the reply Burt,

The server I have has the same integrated video adapter the CL-5446. The server is now a standalone running an application locally. The program is an expensive one that was updated recently and now requires 32 bit colors to function, the CL-5446 cannot go that high. I think the simplest solution is to add another PCI video card but I can't find one that will work, at least not a new one. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Right, it's a 32 bit adapter but it only has 1MB and won't display 32 bit color. I would need a card with at least 16MB.

Hello Everyone. Has anyone been able to find a Video card for this server? I have the same problem and I came across this forum. I will try some ISA and PCI Video cards that I have from old DELL and IBM computers. I'll post results later on today.

I'm using an s3 virge dx pci card in my proliant 1600 and it seems to be working fine. I'm running windows xp.

Try popping a Remote Insight Board into it. The onboard graphics adapter of that (ATI Rage something if memory serves) will take over and can handle HiColor.

Pretty cheap on eBay.

Since my last post, thought I would share some information on a suitable video card for the PL1600 that I have installed and use.

Matrox 7003-0301 ( Matrox Millenium G450 ) 32MB PCI
Drivers available from Matrox.

Drives my 19" Monitor in 32bit colour - High Resolution.

PL1600 PIII Dual 500Mhz Win2000 Pro SP4 Bios update year 2000

Intergrated Management Display -
You need an additional ribbon cable - Spare No 283685-001 ( Compaq LCD Backplane Adaptor ) Also known as a Y Cable.

May help somebody out.

I never did find an adapter that worked. The license to the software was located allowing a transfer to a newer computer and the Sheeny man took the Compaq.

Shame you couldn't find a video adaptor for your PL1600.
The Matrox card seems to be working very well, I'm pleased with the performance and the quality it delivers. I'm driving the card pretty much to full potential.
Then again it does have a very good reputation for professional 2D work.

I'v setup and expanded my PL1600 to run Photoshop CS2 on a 19" display,and with the full 1GB memory installed, I'v also set a side a 34.6GB HDD as a scratch disk to help utilised the memory. Photoshop is not to demanding, just likes lots of memory.
Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the performance, not bad for an old school machine. Built like a tank too..

There were no issues on installation of the card as I pre installed the Matrox driver and Matrox Bios befor the card.

Smart Start and Windows 2000Pro auto detected and setup, than I ran the Matrox software.

Running sweet.

The term "Sheeny Man" might be a local thing. I'm in the Detroit area. The modern Sheeny Man arrives in a Ford pickup the night before trash day with trailer full of miscellaneous items, old washing machines, water heaters, anything reuseable or recyclable. Funny thing is though, he takes many items but always leaves the Dells for the next guy that being the "Garbage Man". Thanks for the info on the video adapter.
