I created a project file with task start dates, durations, and predessors. None of the durations are estimates. I tried to use this file as a "template" for a new project that had a start date a few days later than the original. I had hoped that Project would re-schedule the project based on the new start date, but it did not. Will it? If so, what did I do wrong? Thanks.

Doakra,

When you use a template, the Project start is equal to the Project start date in the template file. One of the first steps in using a template is to set the Project Start date from the Project Information dialog. In Project 2007 and earlier the "Project Information" command is in the Project menu. In Project 2010, you'll find it on the Project ribbon in the Properties group.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, but let me explain in a little more detail.

The file I createed is not saved as a template, it is a regular MS Project file. It has all the information that is common to 99% of all the projects I will use it for. It has the tasks, their durations, and their predecessors. All the dates are driven by the start date of the initial task. I want that start date to always be equal to the project start date. Hopefully that makes sense.

I am relatively new to using Project, so I am not 100% sure I have everything set up to to where that will work like I want it to, and I am not sure Project will do what I am wanting to do. Would it help if I sent you an example of one of my files?

Thanks, again.

Hi,

Sorry, you will need to manually set the Project start date when using the file through Project Information dialog.

If you create a new file blank file, it will default to the current date, but most of us are *hopefully* planning future projects.

The best I can recommend is to train your users to set and/or check the Project start date through Project Information.

I also encourage you to change your project file to a template, then no risk of someone forgetting to Save As and not overwrite your "regular" project file.

I hope this helps.
