Any good resources for enthusiastic beginners? Is UML a good place to start for small database projects? Any thoughts on best practice? Are there any tutorials recommended? Any help appreciated.

Depending on how new you actually are, you might start at and the guide to the y2K PM Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). If you skim this you may be able to decide what you need to learn, and what you already know. If you join PMI, which I recommend if you are or wish to become a PM, you can join the PMI's IS Special Interest group. I also found Rita Mulcahy's Tips and Tricks workbook (at or included if you take her Tips & Tricks class) an easy read for tips to handle common PM problems. I've been a PM for a few years but sitll found this valuable.

Thanks for the guidance, I will probably join PMI, but first need to get to grips with being a PM. I am looking for idiot guides really, if I find any then I will post them in the FAQ for other PM aspirants.

Well, since you mention it, I think I did see a PM book in either the "For Dummies" or "For the Complete Idiot" series. martintatetraining.net also does a tiny notebook called the "Project Management Memory Jogger" that you might find helpful, as it's a highly structured step-by-step methodology. It's sold at the PMI web site too.

tanks for te tp, the site looks like the kind of thing am after.

Cheers

I highly recommend the Fast Forward MBA book on Project Management. It is very readable and touches on all the major PM areas.

I want to thank elizabeth for recommending my book, the Project Management Memory Jogger. I have a new book out for beginners called Getting Started in Project Management that might also be of interest.

Try the Gantthead.com website also. It is a partial free & paid content site put up by PM & Management Guru James Martin's company.
