Hi,

I want to do a project management course but am confused. I initially thought of PMP certification but as I started reading, there are so many courses and so many universities which offer it. What do you think is the best to do? Do pmp certification or MS in project management and from which institute/university?

Thanks.

The PMP certification shows your knowledge of the subject by passing a standardized 'worldwide' test. In addtion, you can't get PMI certified without a certain amount of education and a certain amount of experience. I'd get the PMP if I were you.

I agree, PMI is a very good qualification and is recognised worldwide.

If you are UK based you may also want to consider APMP. This is qualification provided by the Association of Project Management based in the UK.

If you want to work in the public sector in the UK it is also worth getting Prince 2 Practitioner. This is really only a qualification in the Prince 2 method, but it is an important tick in the box.

Finally if you work in Construction or Engineering I would go for an MSC in Project Management. Because it is a postgraduate qualification it will set you apart from other Project Managers who may only have APMP or PMI.

Hope this helps.

Hi there
Sorry to hijack the topic here, but I am in the same boat in looking to get involved in project management.
I'm located in Belgium at the moment and am moving to the UK next year, so would like to do a course online before then.
Would you recommend getting a PRINCE2, PMP or APMP (considering I must be able to do it online)? Obviously cost is always a factor ;)
It will be for use in the UK, but who knows what happens in the future so don't want to get it if it won't help anywhere else. I know in South Africa they look for the PRINCE2 certification (but they do follow the UK).
Thanks
Alan

PMI is recognized worldwide, but you are correct that PRINCE 2 is also big (maybe bigger) in Europe. It is, however, quite scarce in the US, China, Japan, India. You can buy the PM-BOK (body of knowledge) online and study on your own. However, I found the PMBOK to be poorly organized and prefer other representations of the same info. For instance, from the late Rita Mulcahy.

Thanks for the reply.
I think I'll stick to PRINCE2 for now as it was a bit cheaper as well. Once I find a nice position, I might move over to PMP for international certification.

@JohnHerman "...the late Rita Mulcahy."

Wow! I had completely missed that. She will definitely be missed. I have often recommended (based on personal experience!) her materials for PMP exam preparation.

The most important thing is that you get the course under your belt. That is just the foot in the door. Getting experience out in the field is what is going to bring your career to the next level.
