This morning, my manager has mentioned to me that she is making me a Project Lead. The associated project involves the migration of 2 web servers to a centralized data center from the corporate headquarters building. I have printed off some information regarding:

Reverse Proxies
VMWare Virtualization

I know that these terms are in use in the current environment and will continue to be used. I also know that the servers are Win-tel boxes which will point to an application server and finally a database server (incorporated in an Oracle Cluster). The software which is being run is AutoTime 6.1 (by Kaba Benzing). AutoTime is a time and attendance package being used by the organization which I work for.

As you can tell by my lack of details in the problem described above, I have very little experience and information on my new project. What: steps should I be taking, sites should I be visiting, conversations should I be having to get me up to par with my new role?

The first thing is to nail down what exactly is required to migrate those servers.

1. What hardware is being moved? Just servers? Maybe switches? Maybe KVM? etc.

2. It sounds like there may be some interdependencies with other applications. You may have to set up new communications with non-migrated equipment.

3. You will probably need a network engineer for connectivity issues. Site-to-site connections? Remote access?

4. Don't forget about DNS

5. Definitely visit both sites.

6. Does new location have adequate: connectivity, switchports, rack space, power, etc.

I'm sure there are a lot more considerations, but those items are the first to come to mind.

Thank you for your post. I was able to secure some resources within my organization and hold some conference/NetMeetings to get my outstanding issues resolved.
I am in much better shape to create a Project Plan for this effor.
