I've always been confused by this so I'd like an expert opinion. Let me explain...when I open a new workbook, go to the VB Editor and look at the Project Explorer it contains more than just my current "VBAProject".

It always has some random lettered xls/xla file e.g. atpvbaen.xls (ATPVBAEN.XLA) and also sometimes funcres(FUNCRES.XLA). Does anyone know:
- what these do.
- why they are password protected.
- what causes them to be there for each new project when on other machines sometimes you just get the "VBAProject" only.

Is it to do with items you've included in your References list or something similar?

Your insight would be much appreciated!

Stretchwickster,
xla is an extension of excel add-in. It is a workbook which:
- can't be viewed (only VBA modules in VB editor can be viewed) or saved,
- if installed - is opened with excel. Tools>add-ins displays the list of admissible and installed add-ins,
- while opening add-in, excel does not display macro warning dialog,
- can be converted (since excel 97) into regular workbook by setting its ThisWorkbook.IsAddin property to False,
- can be easily created by saving workbook as an add-in (the last on the list). The default directory for user add-in is different from installed with office. But it can be saved and installed from anywhere, when first installed will always be visible in the add-ins dialog.

It is used to customize excel, add UDF functions (an alternative to PERSONAL.XLS), dialogs etc.
As any VBA project, they can be password protected.
ATPVBAEN.XLA and FUNCRES.XLA come with excel, they provide functions for Analysis Toolpack add-in (for vba and excel).
