Progress and Tivoli

We are currently using TSM 4.1 on a RS6000 AIX server. We are using Progress as our database on the AIX system. The only way we can currently backup progress is to shhutdown all the databases first, then backup. Is there an Agent for progress that would allow an online backup that is restorable? I am in the process of testing TSM's ability to backup our NT servers and so far it has done an excellent job. I know there is TDP for SQL which we will need to purchase and I was wondering if there was such an Agent for progress. I was not sure if Tivoli even supports progress.

Haven't heard of a TDP for Progress, you can try the download page though..

According to a response I received from Tivoli support they do not have a TDP for progress. One of the main reasons for getting the Tivoli software was to backup the progress databases onto an overland tape library system. Any ideas on how this should be done? I suppose it will involve shutting down the databases while they are backed up. Perhaps a script within Tivoli?

There is an online backup for Progress databases. Check out the Kbase ID 5967 on the Progress website. We had a rather large multi volume Progress database (58 extents) and did choose to shutdown the DBs at night for a quick full backup. Took less than 30 minutes to stop DB, do probkup, then start DB. We then sent the backup files to ADSM. All this done in one script.

If you cannot afford downtime for nightly full backups, look into AI roll forwarding to another server. This is designed for disaster recovery, but can also be used get full backups from the standby server.

Just some ideas.
