hi is it possible to know if a particular file is being used by any program as many application on my hard drive cannot be opened as they r being used by some program n i cant uninstall or use some of them

Can you explain that again? If you're getting an error what does it say and when are you getting it?

You're trying to find out what kinds of files are used by what programs?

Open Windows Explorer, click View, Folder Options, Click the File Types tab and Whaala!! You've got yourself a list of file extensions and which programs that use these extensions.

For example: Windows Media Player uses the .WMA extension
Internet Explorer uses files that end with .HTM or .HTML
Paintbrush uses the extension .BMP

You can also change, remove and create file associations.
To do this...

In the list of file types, click the one you want to change.
Click Edit.
In Actions, click Open.
Click Edit.
In Application used to perform action, enter the program you want to use to open files that have this extension (you can browse for the app just as easily) Then click OK.

If you have two or more programs using the same extension
you can also delete the association by clicking remove. You can always create a new association.

(I learned this by experimenting !)

Hope this helps X-)
