Their are few programs that keep adding themselves to the start up on launching them. They are quick time player and real player. They add their auto update and messaging to the start up. I removed their folders from the msconfing registery and removed them startup on HMLK/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run but obviously their is a command that adds the startup registry key when I run these programs. Does anyone know how to find this command or registry key and delete it?

Short of removing the two programs completely from your system, I know of no way to keep them from registering themselves in the RUN keys of the registry if they are used.

StartUpMonitor, a little freeware utility runs in the background, without even a tray icon, and alterts you when any program attempts an autorun registratioin and allows you to stop it:

in quicktime, under preferences, there is a box to remove the check mark from that will prevent the program from running upon system startup.
After doing this, go to start ==> run ==> msconfig and remove the checkmark from the startup tab.
unless you run 2000, msconfig is not in 2000, to remove it with this OS, after you make the change in preferences: start ==> settings ==> control panel ==> administrative tools ==> component services ==> services: find the quicktime application and right click it ==> properties ==> disable ==> stop ==> ok

Reboot and all will be good.

Styumpy2000,

That option never stayed set for me, QT as well as Real find a way back to the registry RUN keys.

One of the additonal reasons I like the software linked above in my original post, and linney's alternative, is that many IE hijack programs attempt the same thing. It is nice to be notified an given the option to kill the thing before the problem becomes much more severe after a restart.

I was just wondering, has anyone ever checked this Registry location and what part it may play in these type of situations?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

You may find something like this in there -

"key"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run"
"item"="update"
"hkey"="HKCU"
"command"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\FolderName~1\\ProgramName.exe /startup"
"inimapping"="0"
