I'm a .NET developer and was recently asked by a friend to write a couple utilites which will need to access Peachtree's data files. The question I have is: what is Peachtree 2003's data file format and how do you connect to it?

(On a related tangent, is it possible to upgrade Peachtree's data store to a Sql Server or Oracle database?)

On question #2, I do not believe so. This is an antiquated database, circa 1992 (no kidding).

On how to connect, see the faq area of this forum.

Hi Parvenu74,

There is a good ODBC solution in the thread "Connecting with Access or Excel". (I'm personally using Visual FoxPro)

.NET developer using ODBC..... I would look into using some other conn. strings since the performace of PT is not that great to begin with (in comparison to some DBs)...call PT people they might have a work-arround that is not published...but as billch said this is an old DB...I think PT should reconsider changing its core instead of releasing updates.
let me know if you succeed in aspx-asp
good luck

I think Peachtree should just make all the data availible in the .ddf :-/. I worked with Accpac for 3 years and it is also a btrieve database- the tables and file names are very cryptic but at least they are all availible for reporting. grumble grumble...

Seems like Peachtree always starts something get half way thre and stops. The DDE fields are missing a great deal the data dictonary is the same thing. Quickbooks is the same way.

As to redoing the core database I don't think you'll ever see it happen they both have a huge investment in old tech. It is like Visicalc and Lotus one of these days somebody else will do it for the same price and they will be history. Right now I'm starting to work with Cougar Mountain because I think they may just be the one that comes from out of the also rans to do this.

PT.........$300
PAWCOM a "PLUGIN".... $315

this should speak enough about DB quality in PT
"here is another DB that can connect to yours so u can make reports that you can actually use"
it seems that PT would be better of running on Access...... :(
PT should be retailed with "Anger Management 101"
