Is it possible to programmatically update a *.xla file, with a later version of it's self?

What do you mean? Are you wanting to deploy a newer version of an existing XLA to your machine, using code in the existing xla or from say installshield?

The method I've settled on is In basic steps:
1.Rename existing add-in project
2.Copy updated file in to the library
3.Prompt user to restart Excel
4.Remove copied file.

Many thanks for all your help
