Program won't open without Restarting

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but it's the closest i could find to my problem....On one of our workstations (and i've seen it before on others) after going for a couple of days without rebooting his system...some of his programs won't open anymore...if he dblclicks on them he gets the hourglass for a second and then nothing....after he reboots they open fine....at first i thought it was a RAM issue b/c of the large number of icons on his desktop (over 50) and the number of apps he had open....I added 256 (now at 384)...but it's still doing it?????Any ideas on what's causing this and how to fix it?
