Program won't find IE 6

After loading Internet Explorer 6.0, there have been several instances when programs I am running or browser-detection websites won't recognize IE 6 on my computer. It acts if I don't have Internet Explorer. This is mostly in testing out samples of my Microsoft Visual Studio 6.

Why won't it find IE6, but still look for IE4-IE5?
