Program to determine names of tapes in tape drives

Hi - We run our backups unattended at night in various locations. We rely on nontechnical staff to manage tapes in those locations. We would like an automatic process that can be run in the afternoon to check that the correct tapes have been inserted in the tape drives. If an incorrect tape has been inserted or no tape, then we would like an email or sms alert to server admin staff. Any ideas?
