Program remote automation/control problem (VB.NET)

I have written a program that fills text fields and makes combobox list selections in another running application. It works fine as long as the remote program has the tab pages on a tab control containing the fields I am filling active. If another tab is selected in the remote application, my program runs through with no errors, but the data is not entered into the remote application. Any suggestions?
