Program Installation i/o device error

Running Windows XP and am receiving an error when trying to install programs "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". CD/DVD player will play DVD's but will not install any programs. Have tried Microsoft's suggestion at

but this does not fix the problem -
Any ideas ?? :-(

Are there any clues in the Event Viewer?

Have you looked around Google for any other solutions.
