Program Error in Outlook 2000

Outlook 2000 (pre-SR1 or 2) gives an error message and quits, (writing an indecipherable error log), when an attempt is made to access a file via the Outlook bar. The OS is Win2K Pro.
I can't find any reference to this at MS.com and wonder whether anyone else has experienced it and has a fix.
Thanks. (Not using SR-1 because of exe attachment block.)
