Hi,
I'm encountering a bizarre issue. I just recently changed my two pc's to a wireless network. Even since, unless BOTH machines are ON, I cannot open Photoshop on my new machine, it hangs and then doesn't respond. Any ideas??? Also, I cannot access my printer from the old machine. The network seems to be one-way... I can access the old machine fine, but can't get into the new one from my old one...
could this be related? I'm NOT a network person, and this has been difficult, but oh so wonderful too!
Many thanks for any help!
Anne

I think you need to supply a few more details. What operating system is in use on the PC's, what network hardware etc are you using. Do you have a firewall & antivirus software installed and configured on the PC's?

Hi,
I have windows xp home edition on both machines. I'm using SBC wireless DSL and set up the network using the windows 'set up a small business or home network' facility. I don't think I did that right, but at least it is working one way, and so I'm reluctant to change it... I also use ZoneAlarm Pro and Norton Antivirus on both machines.
Does that help figure out what is going on?
Thanks so much,
Anne

Anne,

As a first step, I would try disabling the firewall and antivirus on both machines and see if that makes any difference. You may want to unplus the DSL to the internet whilst you do this. Remember to turn the firewall and AV back on when you have finished testing.

You say you cannot access the new machine from the old one - by which I assume you are refering to file sharing?
You also say you cannot access the printer from the old machine - what is the printer attached to? the new machine, a print server? If it is attached to the new machine then it is likely to be related I would think.

Just out of curiosity, and to cover all bases, you have enable file and print sharing on the new machine I assume?

Did you have these linked by a network before switching to wireless or have you just created a new network to link the two machines ?

Hi all,
thanks for all your input. Yes, I did enable file and printer sharing. Yes the printer is connected to the 'new machine'. The network is via 2wire and come to think of it, only the new machine has the matching 2wire pcmcia, the other one uses an old one. But both can connect to the internet wonderfully. No, I did not have a network prior to the wireless router. In fact, I bought the wireless DSL merely as a way to get online, then I realized that I could try to connect the two computers together. I have this old, excruciatingly slow one, that I now use as a music machine and to play international DVD for my daughter - and I use the new one as my work horse. However, I have an external hard-drive attached to the 'old music machine' to have enough storage for my music and I want to use that as a backup. This is working well. I CAN access the FAT drive from my new machine. But then I tried to do some work while watching TV and I still have some good old software (which I sometimes prefer to use to get ideas going - older version of photoshop, illustrator and macromedia) but I can not figure out how to get to my new machine and most annoyingly the printer. I can circumvene the file sharing issue, by saving all the files I need on the FAT drive, but when I have the old machine off the cables, I don't have that plugged in. So it's not that I can't work at all, it's just taking me many walks around the block, when I know it can be done... I just don't know how. However, I will invest in having someone come out here to look at my setup. I'm sure I messed up the computer name or network name or number or something like that. Most bizarre though is that I cannot use Photoshop on my new machine unless the 'old music machine' is running... odd no?
Anyhow, that you all for your time and help. I will keep you posted so that this might be a learing curve for others... or a look-up tool.
Thanks,
Anne

Hi,

"Most bizarre though is that I cannot use Photoshop on my new machine unless the 'old music machine' is running... odd no"

Did you install Photoshop from the old computer, for example, did you run the set-up file from your old computer. If not, how did you install it to the new computer.

First thing I would do is from each computer get the following info:
Computer name
Workgroup
IP address, subnet
Turn off any firewall or security software.
As you are using XP home you need to turn off "simple file sharing" from control panel.
also, print a test page from the printer and write down the details, Share name,
etc.

good luck

Dzon
