I'm running Suse Linux 7.0 and proftpd.
Everything worked fine until i changed the config file and tried to reboot the server.
After rebooting i started the ftpd-daemon with "proftpd", but when trying to connect i get the following error message:
"500 FTP server shut down (going down at Mon Aug 19 18:28:16 2002) -- please try again later.
ERROR:> Unknown response code: 500"

What does that mean? - Sure i shut down the server, but i aleady restarted it:
ps -aux | grep proftpd also says:
proftpd (accepting connections)

Any ideas ? ---------------------------------------

Ooops, i'm sorry - again I had been to fast with my posting...
I just had a stale /etc/shutmsg file.
After deleting everything worked fine again.

Sorry,

Did you use the ftpshut command to shutdown the proftpd daemon?

The ftpshut command provides an automated shutdown procedure that a superuser can use to automatically disconnect current proftpd connections, and deny new connections. The command creates a control file as /etc/shutmsg to inform proftpd processes about an impending shutdown.

Check for the existence of the /etc/shutmsg file. If it exists, delete it and restart the daemon.

I posted that message at the same time you said that you already resolved it.
