i have a ps3 farm
in is in a work group - 5 servers
there is a mix of terminals and pc's so the desktop is published - it is tied down
my problem is profiles

i dont really want to use roaming profiles - as it introduces an unneccesary single point of hassle
they dont store anything in the profile that is required
using a gpo i notice that you can exclude parts of the profile in the roaming profile but cant see a way to do this with a local profile - i know you can specify a size but i this would cause issue as they would be able to delete stuff from it if it exceeded.

am i missing an option
is volatile the answer ?
dont like the ideal of mandatory but ?

Roaming profiles work fine as long as you redirect My Documents to the user's Network Home Directory. You can even redirect the start menu if you'd like. You can also look at Flex Profiles which are a combnation of mandatory profiles and user defined setttings from .OPS file.

I wouldn't use local profiles if you need to provide a consistent user environment.

You can still have roaming profiles that AREN'T mandatory. I publish a desktop to about 600 users (PS4 Farm of 22 servers). They all get a roaming profile that is NOT mandatory.

I redirect their MY DOCs, Start Menu, and their desktop so that their profile doesn't not grow too big and slow down log in times...

Hope this helps!

i'm running a nalwin shell on it so the desktop isnt toucheable by them

they do have interent access etc so i amnt really bother about the profile as it is irrelevant

i think i will look at flexi profiles first and re assess from there

cheers

The items to be concerned about are the application settings that may be stored in the registry. Just because you don't use explorer.exe, doesn't mean you don't have to be concerned about the profile settings.

it is purely for two apps
these apps have no settings
settings come from edir for them
