I have a user on SCO Open Server 5.0.6 who's profile is not executing the last line, which opens our accounting application. I have copied the same profile for the last 5+ years with no problems. The user is able to type the command manually and get in the system so I know that works. Just wondering what I should do to troubleshoot the profile.

Can you post the .profile?

Make sure that particular user is the owner of their .profile. When they log in, do they get kicked right back out, or get dropped to a $ prompt? Make certain their entry in /etc/passwd is similar to the other normal users.

Thanks for the advice. The user just gets put at the $ prompt. I'll check those things on Tuesday when I get back into the office.

Thanks, it was not running the .profile because root owned the file. I deleted the user folder and went into SCO Admin and had it recreate the home directory. That fixed everything. I created the user at the command prompt instead of using the SCO Admin utility. I was trying to speed up setup of users in our legacy systems. Obviously I didn't set things up correctly.

What command could I have used to change the ownership of a file or folder? The folder was owned by the user but since I didn't have the user setup correctly there must not have been the correct "ownership filters" set.

man chown

Hope This Helps, PH.
