Get the dreaded message "The operation failed. An object could not be found." when trying to send or receive mail. As far as I can see this appears to point to a damaged profile. Using Outlook 2002 under XP Home (SP2). Tried repairs to Outlook, adding SP3 etc., but no joy.

Making a new profile is all very fine, but what about the myriad of folders, e-mails, calendar appts and contacts, quite apart from having to create all the accounts again.

How do I shift all that lot over? Or don't I...?

You could try the /safe or /cleanviews switchs from Q296192, but you will probably need to create a new profile. Assuming that you're not using Exchange, when the new profile is created, you can tell it to use your old .pst file which will contain all your existing mail, contacts, calender, etc.

Did this work and then quit working?

Or are you just unable to get it connected?

Is this mail on Exchange or a POP3 account?

Thanks for replies guys.

I'll check out the switches when I'm next in front of the offending machine. Not using Exchange - just POP3. I created a new profile, but didn't see any option to use existing .PST file. Will recheck for that as it would probably save the day.

Yes, it was working previously. Machine contracted a lot of spyware, adware etc., and also someone had been messing with the CPU heatsink which unsurprisingly resulted in endless BSODs. All that's been sorted, but then was told Outlook would not send or receive mail. Made a new (temporary) profile, and it would then send mail ok.

I cannot find any tools which will repair profiles, but if a new profile can draw on the old .PST file, then that will be fine...

Roger,

Locate the *.pst file path.

In OL, File > Data File Management > and follow path to the pst and select.

This should take care of connecting to the maile store.

As you hae the POP3 working on temp profile, just insure that the settings (all) are correct.

Thanks rvnguy. I've looked at a machine here running Outlook, and can see where the file(s) get selected now. Will see what happens when I visit the other PC. Thanks.
