Good Morning,

I have been having a strange problem with one of my 4108GL HP switches.
Quite often I will get a call from a user that is connected to this
4108 switch complaining they have no network connection. When I go to
look at it it seems the light on the port is just solid (but lit) or it
may flash really SLOW. I sometimes can take the patch cable out of the
port and put it into another port on the switch and it may work may.
Sometimes I can even plug it into another port and if it works, take it
out and plug it into the original port that wasn't working and it may
work then!! Weird! I tried upgrading the firmware...nothing changed.
Any ideas???

Thanks,
Wes

Id call hp about that one. All hp switches are covered for life so id get a ticket in case you need to replace it. So far their tech support is very good.

do you use ospf on the swithces...?

if so this is related to the nic card stops the connection for less than a second causing the 4108 not to activate the first path again.

Thanks, I am not sure if I use ospf, I cannot see where I would that would be when I log into my switch. Do you know where to find this? Do you think I should use this protocol?

OSPF is "open shortest path first". You use it when you have different routes/paths to a single destination, so when your first and shortest path is down, it automaticly trunks and routes it another direction. So you can almost call it a failover wihtin a single device.

This is probably not the best way to describe it but, hey, i'm not a pedagog...

Ah, thanks. Do you know where you select this option from within the switch? I cannot find it.

I'm not sure whether it is possible on the 4108gl switch or not. It was more or less to inform you that there is a problem with it with hp switches. I thought every module based switch from hp had this feature. Try to search the manual for it at hp.com.
