I have a job coming up where I would like to use a Procurve 2524 for the first time. I'm working my way through the manual at the moment (never used a managed switch before) and the features look great, but from what I've read so far, it doesn't replace the need for a router. Have I got that right, and if so, can someone recommend a router to use? The system will be on a VDSL line and I would like to be able to administer everything, router and Procurve remotely.

Any combinations that you particularly like, or found reliable?

You are right there is no routing in the 2524 switches. You can use a linux router. This will be very cost effective and performant.

I have some great experience with HP ProCurve 26xx models (2626 or 2650); it has BASIC routing (no RIP/OSPF/EGP etc); but it has just enough to make a GREAT backbone switch: limited to 32 routes in its table.

HTTPS/CLI/SSH etc... for remote mngt. & you can get a free HP ProCurve Manager and gather some good traffic info on the fly...

9.6Gbps for the 2626 and 13Gps for the 2650.
