Hi all,
I joined recently to this forum. We're using Procomm Plus 4.8 to telnet to the UNIX box (SCO 5.0.5) and run our custom programs written in Business Basic. We updated all the client PC's to P4 with WinXP Pro and I re-installed Procomm on each PC. If I open more than one screen on the PC, the telnet connection is closing alone. If I opened again, it closes later by itself. I tried to do a custom installation (only what's needed for telnet, no data, no internet and no fax) and I also installed it with all options, but the result is the same. If I have the telnet connection opened on one PC and I'm opening another one on an other PC, than one of the connections will close automatically. On the old PC's we're running Procomm under Win98 SE and can open as many sessions as licences available on UNIX, on one PC or on multiple PC, but under XP I can't. I installed the dll file that Knob suggested and I also played with the compatibillity, but doesn't help. The interesting thing is that before we purchased the new PC's, I installed XP on my computer on top of 98 where I had already Procomm and that machine works fine, no connection is closing by itself. On the help menu of Procomm the system is identified as Windows NT. We are using Procomm for a very long time, with wyse50 emulation and all the function keys are set up to be identified by Business Basic programs, but if there is no way to make Procomm work under XP, than we'll need to adjust to some other emulator who can provide a good emulation with all the function keys (F1 to F12) working (and that's hard to find).
Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

If you use the telnet program that comes with XP (Start | Run, enter telnet), do you see the same problems? Are the different connections all using the same login information, or is each connection logging into a different account?

Hi Knob,
The different connections are using the same account name or different account names, it doesn't matter. On Win98 SE, as long as you don't exceed the number of licences on UNIX, you can open as many sessions as you want, but on XP, if you open more than one session on the same computer for the same account name or if you open a session on one computer and another session on another computer for the same account name, one of the sessions is disconnecting.
I didn't try yet the same thing using the telnet that comes with XP, but I'll try it first thing in the morning and I'll let you know. All the computers are connected through TCP/IP, 2 of them are already on XP in the same workgroup and all the others are on Win98 SE and logged in to an NT Server which domain has the same name as the XP's workgroup. On the extra computer with XP on top of Win98 the workgroup is the same as on other 2 XP's and there is no problem for multiple sessions with the same name and with different names.
Thanks,
Joseph

Hi,
I tried what knob suggested and here are the facts:
- started XP's telnet for the same user account 3 sessions and one session closed in the middle of the process
- having a Procomm session opened on an XP computer and starting a session on XP's telnet on another computer (for the same user), closed the Procomm connection.
We need to have the ability to open multiple sessions for the same account, which is fine on Win98.
I'll install "putty" or "NetTerm" on the same computers and try to open multiple sessions on those emulators and on XP's telnet (and combined) to see if the problem is network related (XP) or emulator application related.

Joseph, are the XP machines you are running fully-patched (SP1 or SP2 if it is out, security fixes, etc.)? I haven't done much work with XP myself, but haven't heard of similar problems. If it occurs in both XP's telnet client and Procomm's telnet client, then that makes me think the issue is either in XP itself or on the connecting machine. Since it appears your 98 machines do not have this problem, I would point a finger at XP.

Thanks for your help. I think you're right. On one XP computer I can open 3 XP telnet sessions OK and the fourth one will disconnect. When I'm working on this computer, on the other XP computer where a user is logged in Procomm session, sudenly that session closes by itself, but I didn't use that account to XP telnet on my other computer.
I received these PC's with OS installed and they're configured to do automatic updates. What I think I'll do is reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS and the service pack(s) and try it again. If it doesn't work than I'll try to reformat and reinstall Win98 and after that install XP on top. This is a lot, but there is no other choice to make telnet work for multiple sessions.
Thanks again
