I there a variable like $FTPCONNECT for a modem to tell if the modem connected? (0 = Idle, 1 = connecting, 2 = connected, 3 = failed.)

There isn't one system variable that encompasses it all like $FTPCONNECT does, but you can use $CARRIER (1 if connected, 0 if not) and $DIALING (0 if idle, 1 if making a data call, 2 for a fax call, and 4 for a voice call) in combination to get something close.
