Recently we have been told not to use Procomm to access certain devices in our network via telnet, due to the fact that it causes the TL1 process to freeze. We ran across the same problem when connecting to these devices from certain UNIX boxes, due to certain flags differing between windows telnet and unix. Can you specify telnet settings within Procomm/Aspect, or can you launch the telnet session within the host systems (w2k) telnet client?

You might try disabling telnet negotiation in Procomm in case performing the negotiation causes something dodgy to happen. To do so, select the Options | Telnet Options menu item within Procomm (while in telnet mode), check the Disable all telnet negotiation checkbox, and see if you can successfully connect to one of the problem boxes.

Thanks for the quick response! Sounds like thats the trick... it should make Procomm use the expected settings of the terminal its connecting to, right?

Of course I'll probably be hardcoding the VT100 terminal type into the script, anyways. I'll have to try this out on the dacs in the lab - can't try this out on a production box.

Is there a command to disable all telnet negotiation from within the script, like an addon to the connectmanual command - so I can make the script more portable. The end result of this script will not only reside on our terminal server, but also on several portable laptops. And also so it won't affect the Procomm settings for other loaded scripts?

You can use the set telnet negotiation OFF command in your script to turn off telnet negotiation. This setting will remain in effect until you turn it back off or shut down Procomm and restart it (i.e. it only lasts for that session of Procomm).

Now if there are only certain machines you need to turn off telnet negotiation, what you could do is create two different telnet configurations in the Procomm Setup dialog, then assign the appropriate configuration in the Connection Directory entry (if you wanted to go that route, since you are using connectmanual now). To do that, you would select Options | Telnet Options in Procomm, click on the Modify button in the upper right hand corner, choose the Save As button, and enter a name for the new configuration. Under one of the configurations you would have telnet negotiation on and the other configuration would have it turned off. Then in the Connection Directory, you would assign the proper configuration by clicking on the Telnet Options button and choosing the telnet options set that is needed.
