Ted, I haven't tried Procomm on Vista yet and haven't heard of anyone who has done so yet. I'm hoping to give it a spin on a test machine at work in the near future but haven't had a chance yet. What sort of error are they getting and what version of Procomm are they using? If it's not 4.8, I think XP mentions something about the RapidRemote program that was part of earlier versions of Procomm (it could cause conflicts with some video drivers), so it's possibly Vista is not letting those earlier versions run as well.
"Vista won't even launch the the installation program. The welcome screen comes up, and you click on install, then Vista asks you if you trust the program, and you click yes, then nothing happens"
If you have any ideas about something to try, I can walk him through it...
Hmm, so you don't even see the Symantec Procomm splash screen come up after clicking on the Install Symantec Procomm Plus option from the initial dialog? What happens if you go to the PROCOMM PLUS\CD directory on the CD and run setup.exe? I presume the same thing, but you never know.
Not having used Vista yet, does it have the ability to run programs in compatibility mode like XP does? You can check this (unless the way to do so changed in Vista) by right clicking on setup.exe in Explorer and seeing if there is a Compatibility tab. If so, try running as XP or Windows 2000.
I have walked the customer through the steps you recommend. Running the Setup.exe directly form the CD folder seems to work. I also had him compile a script (successful) and he went ahead and created a connection to a server.
Right now I do not see any compatability problems, will wring it out further when I get there next (within the next month)
Although it may not be needed for ProComm, there does appear to be a "compatability mode" in Vista.
Gleaned from the internet (I haven't seen a Vista machine yet):
"To configure the compatibility mode for an application, just locate the installation directory and right click on the .exe, selecting Properties from the menu. Then you select the Compatability tab."
At this screen you can tick "run this program in compatability mode for:" and point to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
Unless Symantec has redone their website, it looked like they were no longer selling or supporting Procomm to me a couple weeks ago. The Procomm link I have had on my site for several years is no longer good and Procomm is not in their list of products, but you can still get to the support knowledge bases and file downloads.
