I have searched but have been unable to find an answer to my question. What is the main difference between a Pentium 4 processor and a Celeron D processor? As you know, the Celeron is quite a bit cheaper than the Pentium. What is the main reason for that? I am looking at purchasing a new computer just to run Microsoft Office, the internet and a few other small programs. Any help would be very much appreciated.

The Celeron D has less L2 cache and a slower FSB than a P4 EE. If you're looking for a simple, low-end PC, don't forget to take a look at the AMD Semprons. They typically outperform the Celeron D (when given a certain budget price).

Half as much on chip level 2 cache and 533 instead of 800 front side bus.
Celeron D's are much improved over the older, very poor performing Celeron but are still well short compared to a full Prescott P4.
cdogg points out AMD Semprons, I would add, if it is a budget low cost system you are after with maximum performance, then you can still just about get hold of a Barton core Athlon XP CPU (getting increasingly difficult to get hold of)

A Barton Core XP paired with an Nvidia Nforce2 or Via KT880 chipset motherboard "at the same price point" is still going to knock the spots off a budget Celeron D system.

Something like the Asus A7V880 or A7N8X-Deluxe
