I used to watch dvds on my laptop, starting about a week ago I haven't been able to do this anymore. about 15 minutes into a dvd playback gets really choppy. I don't know much about troubleshooting this sort of thing. I do know that my processor gradually climbs to 100%. I've tried closing down all my programs and unplugging all my usb connected devices, but it still peaks out. The only program I've installed recently is a video game, civilizations. I've uninstalled that to see if it would do anygood, it doesn't. The only suspicious thing I notice when I look at a list of running programs is about 5 instances of svchost running. I shut some down and my comp still plays choppy dvds and then I shut down the wrong one and my computer shuts down. Do you think this is a virus issue? I've run mcafee, spysweeper and spybot but my machine always comes back clean.

What OS? If you are using XP, run MSCONIG and look at the startup list. Also look at the FAQ in this forum for rules about using HiJackThis. Finally, download and run MSAS (Microsoft AntiSpyware.)
