Morning all, I recently acquired a used ACS system, R1.0 that had been sitting for quite some time. When I fired it up, I got a lot of static on 6 of the 8 ports on the processor. However, I could still program from extensions 10 & 11, just really bad static on the ports. I think I know the answer, but wanted to run this by some of you gurus out there. Is this system worth saving or can it be repaired?
Thanks In Advance

well I would leave it powered up for a day or so and see what happpens

but it sounds like its got problms

not user repairable but you might want to call and get some repair prices.

it can be upgraded to a 6.0

just rembred I did run into something similar awhile back.

processor had been in storage ,powered up some static on some ports , let it burn in whent back the next day and it was clear (and still is)

Skip555, I'll give it a try when I get home. I'll let it burn in for a day or two. The only other thing I found was that the backup batteries had been in so long they had started to leak. Think it might be a problem there?

If the static does not go away, it is likely that you have some bad capacitors on the ports. Also, make sure that you are very careful to clean up the battery residue. Use a little baking soda in some warm water on a q-tip. If the residue is left on, it will eat the tracings on the circuit board.

Well, so far so good. The static is gone on all but ext. 15. However, I've replaced the batteries but still the "Replace batteries w/power on" message when I plug into 10 or 11. Suggestions?

well if the battries leaked did you clean the contacts down in the "battery tube" I would use the eraser on a pencil for that.

ext 15 static may clear or could be a bad cap

No haven't cleaned the contacts, that my next move. Thanks for all the input.

There is a product out there called "De-Ox-It" that works great for getting corrosion off of contacts (and almost everything else).

Follow with a non-residue cleaner. Electrowash 2000 comes to mind. De-Ox-Id is really good stuff, I use it all the time. Not on phone systems normally.

Just a quick update: I checked the battery tube, and didn't see any signs of corrosion, etc. But I still have the message "replace sys batteries w/power on". What else to check here or just give up on the system? Also strating to hear a clicking noise coming from the VM, in which case I'd surmise that the hard drive is going on gone. In any one's opinion, is the VM worth trying to save?
Thanks in advance.

Hi thicks70,
The area where the batteries touch, is that silvery or dull? You may need to change the contacts - try Radio Shack or an electronics parts house. You only want the contacts, you don't care about the holder.
What release is the VM? You can have the drive replaced and that may be your best course. VS R4 minimum or I would consider getting a new VM, just for the additional features.

The contacts look silvery, and the VM is rel4.0 with 2 ports, 10 mailboxes. Any idea how much a replacement drive would cost?

check ebay , there is a guy there selling kits for vm repair for about 200 beleive ,I dont know anything about him Ive just seen the ads.

you could pop the clamshell open and be sure the battery contacts are connected to the board and that you are getting voltage to the board.

evan though you are getiing the battery message does it hold or lose programing ?

thicks70,

Hey read through your post. I would suggest (in my humble opinion) that you should send it in and have it refurbished. There are many places out there that will fix the line problems, the battery, and upgrade you to release 6 for $150.00. Some refurbishers will even give you a 2 year warranty. Before spending too much more time on it, it might be more economical to send it in. (Time is money) just my 2 cents.

Mark

well if its losing the programing then battery power is not getting to the processor . take it apart , see where the continuity is

Sandman, I'll give the refurb some thought. Know of any places right off hand, or any of the trade magazines to check? I'm going to crack it open as well and see what I can see. Anyone know how much the upgrade cards are going for these days, and aren't they one use cards, unlike the one for Merlin systems?
