processing object domain user failed

I log on to domain as administrator of domain from 2000 client and try to add user xyz to domain users or admins group and log in I get Processing of object Doman Users failed with thw following error. The SPECIFIED DOMAIN EITHER DOES NOT EXSIST OR COULD NOT BE CONTACTED. I can ping and I can see all computers on network but cannot login from laptop on lan . note user id work from other computers.
