I have a user who is showing like this:
hlcorl 216336 214576 0 Dec 31 - 0:00 []
hlcorl 247704 246952 0 Dec 31 - 0:00 []

These cannot be killed and the date is erroneous - user was logged on yesterday! DOes anyone know what causes these and how to get rid of them without shutting down?

What do you mean they can't be killed?

Did you try kill -9 PID?

It will not kill with a -9. It has the characteristics of a defunct process - almost.
I saw these in the early days of AIX when a tty device was too far from the cpu.

Parent process was:
root 246952 11874 0 Nov 08 - 0:00 telnetd -a

And killing it made the process go away - as we both suspected that it would. I did not want to do that until I knew what the process was trying to tell me - why Dec 31 and the job as []?????

Maybe the user was in a rush last New Year's Eve and forgot to log off ;-)
