Hi!

I need submit to my boss the procedure to upgrate our database from Oracle 6 to 8i. Can anyone on the board help me in this regard. I am basically looking for the procedure to upgrade, and scripts for porting data and the checklist for doing all this in a perfect way.

You help will be greatly appreciated.

This topic is covered in great detail in the Oracle migration guide for the release that you plan on migrating to. That should be the first thing you consult, and it will probably answer 99% of your questions.

As a broad overview of what you will probably have to do, I see that the migration utility won't work if the previous version of Oracle is too old. "Too old" is apparently platform specific. However, my guess is that Oracle 6 is probably too old for any platform. That means you have two options:

1. Migrate Oracle 6 to a version of Oracle 7 that the Oracle 8i migration utility supports. Then proceed with the Oracle 8i migration. This option sounds sort of complicated, and I would not choose it unless the alternative failed. The alternative is

2. Install Oracle 8i and create a completely new database. Export the data from your Oracle 6 database and import into the Oracle 8i database.
