I have a client with a Windows 2003 Server, cable modem (Comcast/Dynamic IP Address), 6 XP clients and a D-Link DI-604 Router.
Right now, I allow only 2, and have no need to allow any additional users to connect remotely via Remote Desktop, to work from home.
Each PC and the server are on FIXED NAT IP addresses.
Each XP client in the office has a registry mod to allow connection to any machine via RDP remotely (i.e., 192.168.0.20:3390, 192.168.0.21:3391, and so on).
This all works 100% flawlessly.
However, I'd now like to setup a VPN for a more secure connection.
I obtained a Linksys BEFSX41 router with VPN capabilities.
How would I go about setting up the new Linksys to co-exist with the D-Link to allow VPN connections for 2 users?
I also see in Windows Server 2003 it can be setup to act as a VPN Server also, so do I still really need the Linksys Router?
I need step by step, as I never did this before.
Now, the purpose of the Remote Connection is to allow the Remote users to work from home to do MS Word Processing. It is very efficent and works.
If I setup the VPN successfully, I'd assume all I'd need to do is map the remote server drive share locatation to the location of the documents (i.e., F:\WPDOCS) or \\192.168.0.1\wpdocs) and just have each remote user map the drive to be able to access the documents remotely and use their home PC to use MS Word to open the remote docs, etc., or is is still better to work remotely via RDP??
Additionally, I will need to access remotely from time to time to offer support, so I would still need the ability to connect via RDP, or even Remote Assistance.
Finally, is there a process for each remote client to perform to connect via Remote Desktop once a VPN is setup (like initialize the connection via VPN before connecting the RDP)?
If so, is there a way to automate it with one click/authentication?
Any or all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
