I need to install 8.0.x and 8.1.x in separate homes on the same Sun (SPARC Solaris) box. I haven't done this in a while and never with 8.1 (just different levels of 8.0) so I wanted to see if anyone could confirm or correct the following procedure:

1) create groups for:
a. OUI for 81 (oinstall)
b. 8.1 home
i. DBA (oradba81)
ii. Operator (oraopr81)
c. 8.0 home
i. DBA (oradba80)
ii. Operator (oraopr80)
2) create unix accounts for:
a. OUI for 8.1 (oinstall)
i. primary group oinstall
b. 8.1 home (oracle81)
i. primary group oradba81
ii. secondary groups oraopr81,oinstall
c. 8.0 home (oracle80)
i. primary group oradba80
ii. secondary groups oraopr80,oinstall
3) install 8.0.x as oracle80 user
4) install 8.1.x as oinstall user

It's really the last two I'm uncertain about. I know I need to install 8.0 first but I'm not sure whether to install it as oracle80 or oinstall. Any advice from someone who's done this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I've not done this with 8 (only with 7.xx) but I've always used the one user 'oracle' and the one group 'dba' for all versions of oracle. Am I missing something?

you're right...

I did it my way and it's a big mess! they both work but it's confusing as heck (permissions, groups, listeners on different ports, etc.). Somewhere I got the idea that because of the changes in 8i OUI it had to be installed under a separate user but that doesn't appear to be the case. I can run one's .profile as the other, add them to the other's group and control either version from either user.

I'm going to flush both versions and reinstall under a single users and just have separate profiles. I'll probably add 80 or 8i to the prompt as a reminder of which "mode" I'm in.

Oh, well, it was a good learning experience even if a little frustrating at times.

:)

yep -- the different versions can even share the same listener.....
