When should you use the /proc directory and how
 
The /proc directory isn't part of the file system in the traditional sense. It is a pseudo file system that is contained in memory. Its contents hold information regarding the processes that are running on the system. Much of it can be read by any user, though some is restricted to root, or the process owner.
