probs with win 98se install

My machine started giving 'fatal errors' 'will be shut down' and gradually got worse until it did it on every program. I did format c:/u and tried to re-install win 98se after 3-4 failed attempts where it 'froze' at checking for availible disc space I tried again after another format. After 'copying win98 files to your computer' it went to re-start and then flashed up a quick message which I couldn't read and then switched itself off. When I switched back on and tried to start in safe mode I received 'ERROR HIMEM.SYS DETECTED UNRELIABLE MEMORY AT 03BFC014 XMS DRIVER NOT INSTALLED press enter to continue, so I did and got HIMEM.SYS is missing press ctrl+alt+del where it tried to re-start but flashed a message again and shut down.
I can't get past this stage now but before I have got windows on and other programs too before things went wrong. It gets worse on every attempt to install. I even tried winME and got so far before I was receiving .dll errors where .sys & .dll files were missing and then once again every time I tried I got less far.
Please Please can anybody help me?????????

Every think of trying another stick of memory, perhaps the chipset of the ram doesn't compatible with your MB

When Himem.sys says there is a problem with the memory (ram), it isn't lying.

If that RAM is the original RAM that came in the system and was running fine for awhile before you started noticing any problems... Try removing the RAM and blowing out the slot with compressed air, then reinstall it making sure it seats properly and try again... If you still get problems, then likely it will need to be replaced.

In fact I just finished dealing with this very same issue this morning. I ended up replacing the RAM on the machine.
