I had major problems using my Verizon DSL internet connection with Windows XP Professional.
I used the built-in PPPOE create connection wizard and everything seemed fine. I connected easily and browsing the net was as good as it had been with Win98. Only when I tried to use my corporate e-mail via a VPN connection to the corporate network did I realize there was a problem.
The symptom was that I could receive and read e-mail, but could not reply or forward. After many seconds, an error message would appear telling me that "network operation did not complete in a reasonable amount of time" and giving me the choice to retry or cancel.
Since an M700 with Win98 had no problems at all on my Verizon DSL, I started looking for ways to quantify what was going on.
Using both "online" and an installed monitoring utility, I determined that the Win 98 machine could achieve an average thruput of 250kbps down and 75 kbps up,
(to internet sites including our ftp server outside the firewall)
The XP setup also achieved 200-300kbps downloads, but uploads were less than 1kbps. Most internet based measuring utilities just "froze" during upload testing!
I had already updated the drivers for the NIC, recreated my (built in XP PPPOE) DSL connection, updated the firmware on my Westell DSL modem,
checked all the Network connection properties, even tweaked some registry settings for faster DSL thruput ( I can send you info on this if you would like it)
but my upload speed remained the same.....nearly zero.
Now, the point to all this:
I downloaded and installed (on the XP machine) the latest version of RASPPPOE, (a freeware pppoe client which has been tested with XP)
It is installed by adding the RASPPPOE protocol to the NIC properties, then running a little "create connection" executable. I had no problems installing it
or creating the connection, and connected to Verizon immediately.
And, Voila: upload speed is now 74kbps, Notes via VPN works correctly, and there are no other negative effects to the machine that I can see.
I do not know what this means for other XP/DSL users, but it may be of use at some point. I am going to post this on some forums and see what responses
come in.
Please let me know if any of you have encountered similar problems,
thanks!
