I am using Windows XP and Word 2000. It happens that I couldn't open Word, namely I double click the Word icon. Word does not open, no message appears. Word appears on the task bar, but when I right click it, the option restore is greyed out and when click option close, I get dialog box that Word does not respond. After several reboots, Word is now working, but I would to know what it was and how to prevent it in the future.

Unless/until this can be caused intentionally (or regularly) the actual cause may never be known. . .

There are just too many variables that no one will know . . . Unless you have been doing some kind of experimenting with configurations, definitions, etc.

Suggest you make sure your system is as "clean" as possible (no virus/malware hiding away) and move on.

Are you using Word as E-Mail editor for Outlook?
There might be a Word process hanging in the background.

Also close all instances of Word, browse to
Documents and Settings => [yourprofile] => Application Data => Microsoft => Templates

There, rename your "Normal.dot" to "Normal.old"

Start Word to check whether the problem is solved.

Cheers,
