I am trying to copy a tape for off-site storage. When I use the tapecopy command it tells me "Connect to target tape failed, rc[27]. Do you need two drives to copy a tape? If so is there any other way to copy a tape with only one drive? We have a tape library with 16 freakin slots in it.

Tapecopy can only be done from one media to another media ie.
from tape to tape (two drives required) or from disk to tape (backup to disk required) or tape to disk / disk to disk).
Basically it copies arcserve sessions (archive files) from SCSI device A to SCSI device B

so you can either buy another tape drive, either as a stand alone or add it to your library if it will support it (but if you do that you will need a license for the Tape Library Option). Another solution is to backup to a FSD file system device and then do two tapecopy jobs. If you are using 11.5 then it has built in support for it, calling is Disk Staging.
