SMS in a complete virtual environment....what a concept.

Does anyone know of any problems that arrise whilst trying to run SMS 2003 in a completely virtual environment.

I have a virtual machine with a single server, hosting all server tools (SMS, SQL, AD, DHCP etc) and some different virtual machines running as clients. These are all running on the same host

All the VMs are running in bridged network mode, which means it essentially has a full network capability, inside and outside of the virtual machine.

I also have some normal PCs, running as clients. All is well with everything but the VM Clients.

The Server is being "assigned and client installed", and is fully queryable. As is the normal PC clients. However, the VM clients are being detected, but not even being shown as assigned.

When running the basic system resources on the VM machines, it is saying that it has been detected by network and AD discovery, and shows the site from which they are discovered. This is a single subnet network (ok, single subnet is a single whole network..anyway) The addresses of all the machines are allocated by DHCP, and are sequential from 99.3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc. So there is no actual reason that the VM clients shouldn't be noted as assigned.

Anyone have any ideas?

Ya know, the MS SMS course had the exact same problem, and it took me a couple days to figure it out in there....and now I forgot what the heck I did to fix it <:p but it seems to me it either had to do with wins or something in netbios... I might have even had to make host file.... I'll think about it ( no guarantees there) but that was the direction I had to go in.

Make a Host File....where do i start on that one?

Someone over at myITf said that he is running it with no problems.

actually as I think about it..I dont think it was a host file, I believe it was either a wins thing (having to manually set the wins addresses on the client) or a something in the netbios settings on the wins tab, its been so long ago I cant recall exactly what it was.

Sorry I cant be of more help...

I pretty much have the same setup and all my VM clients are all discovered and assigned. I did have to fiddle around with it quit a bit though..

Good luck!

:)

When you say "fiddle" can you shed any more light on that?

I have tried everything, the only way they will recognise that is is "assigned" or qualified to be assigned, is if i install the client manually (as in, run it from the client - not manual push)
