Hi everyone, I am having a problem with my desktop shortcuts. whithout any warning my descktop icons will no longer respond. I receive the following prompt when this happens.
"Problems with Shortcuts. The target '"' of this shortcut is not valid. Go to internet shortcut property sheet and make sure target is correct" I can solve this by re-starting, but it becomes a pain. I'm not sure what the shortcut property sheet is. I am currently running Windows XP Pro.
Would appreciate any help on this problem. Thanks, Skihouse

Right click on the shortcut, Properties.

Do the shortcuts reference network shares?

Hi bcastner, Right now the icons are working, I can right click on them, there is no reference to network. I'll try when they are not working. skihouse

Ive had that happen before where a shortcut wouldnt do anything anymore. If I made a new one it would fix the problem. Dont ask me why though!

Hi, It's been a couple of days but the problem has re-occured. Downloads don't seem to help, and right click, and making selections doesn't help. The only thing is to boot up again. Open for any ideas. skihouse

What and where are the Target files and what does it say exactly in the Target of the Shortcut. Is there a difference when it is working and not working? Are the addresses using Variables such as SYSTEMROOT or SYSTEMDRIVE etc., or DOS naming conventions, or are they grayed out with CLSID entries, or are they just in plain language?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
