I'm having some difficulties with setting up my linux as a server:

I can ping out form the linux machine to the internet, but not from another machine into my linux machine.

Any ideas? I'm not running a firewall or a proxy.

Thanks :) Take Care,
Mike

Hi,

Where is this other machine ? If it's a local machine on the same lan then it would probably be a ip config (subnet) issue. If its from a remote box via the internet to you then it would either be a firewall issue or related to the nature of the connection, e.g. nat related.

You need to give more detail of how the 'other machine' is networked....

the other machine isn't networked at all, its another machine through the internet.

I'm not running a firewall, so maybe it has to do with the connection.

How could I fix that? I'm connected via Roaring Penguin PPPoE (DSL) to Earthlink.

Any ideas? Thanks! :) Take Care,
Mike

Hi,

Is that a static address you have or are they using dhcp (where you get allocated an ip address dynamically from a pool) ? Do a '/sbin/ifconfig' command to make sure that you are giving the right ip address for the connected interface. Its conceivable that the ISP is doing some kind of network address translation at its' end so that you can't see the 'real' ip address that is being used.

Is it in any of the following ranges :

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)

172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

Also, what linux distro are you using ?

Rgds

its a static ip address.
i'm using suse 7.0.
now, for some reason i can actually access my server from the internet (weird!). I rebooted, but don't know what i did to make it work.

Thanks for your help anyway :) Take Care,
Mike
